Oil spills are a common event in the Niger Delta oil producing areas and occur due to a number of causes, including corrosion of pipelines, sabotage case, oil production operations and inadequate or non-functional production equipment. Oil spillage has a major impact on the ecosystem into which it is released. The effects of oil spill on the Nigerian mangrove ecosystem is a common story, surface and groundwater pollution render waters unsafe, threatening marine life and man. People in the affected areas complain about health issues including breathing problems and skin lesions; many have lost basic human rights such as health, access to food, clean water. It is important therefore that spills are responded to as soon as possible to minimize the negative effect on the ecosystem.
Oil spill management requires skill and adequate knowledge to effectively combat its effect on the environment. Competency in spill response requires adequate knowledge of regulatory standards and safety requirements, along with the use of modern techniques and tools tailored to meet particular response conditions.
